1) Sligo Rovers vs Rosenborg (UEFA Europa League, 7PM)
Last night we tipped the Irish to fail in their quest against Legia Warsaw and they did so in style but today I’ve got a slightly different angle. Sligo Rovers completed a real shock in the first leg of this tie in Trondheim securing a momentous 1-2 win against Rosenborg thanks to goals from Alan Keane and Danny North in a game where Rosenborg actually failed to score with their only goal coming from Gary Rogers finding his own net. It was a great display from John Coleman’s men which puts them in pole position for reaching the 3rd qualifying round in Europe for the first time in their history and I’m backing them to achieve that. Sligo have been decent domestically this season and a 4-0 win here against Banga in their opening UEL qualifier game proves they have they class for me. Yes, Rosenborg are an entirely different outfit, but they have been having problems as of late. Following their loss against Sligo in the first leg manager Per Joar Hansen and his assistant were shown the door despite some decent success on the domestic scene. “Performances weren’t good enough” is the official line from the board and today a former player in Kåre Ingebrigtsen will take charge in a crucial tie. 3 days is not enough time in my opinion to form a decent plan to approach this 2nd leg tie and having failed to see of Sligo in the 1st leg, I really can’t see them doing it tonight. The Bit O’Red are full of confidence coming into this game and with a packed home crowd on a ground where they are very decent normally, I fancy them making history tonight and progressing to a 3rd round qualifying tie with Turkish side Karabukspor.

2) Hitchin Town vs Hemel Hempstead (UK Friendly, 7:45PM)
I may be taking a slight risk here but I really feel this is worth a shot. Hemel Hempstead continue their pre season preparations this evening by travelling down to Hitchin, a side who they faced last season in a promotion winning campaign. It’s not long now until they begin life in the Conference North against Basingstoke but I really think this has been mispriced to be honest. Hemel Hempstead played Dunstable in a friendly at the weekend losing 3-2 against a side who aren’t even a recognised club on most websites. In this game they played 2 players from their Championship winning squad and Dean Brennan is expected to ring the changes again tonight with a real fringe setup against Hitchin. They’ve also failed to beat both Solihul Moors and Brackley throughout their pre-season preparations. The hosts were demolished 5-0 by Luton in their last friendly but let’s be honest Luton are a class above the Northern Premier side. They played a full strength squad in this fixture though and will be full of confidence with the knowledge that these two sides met twice last season with Hemel failing to beat Hitchin on both occasions. Only 1 division separates the two clubs and that gap has only just been established really and with Hemel failing to strengthen their squad significantly over the summer I really think Hitchin have a shot in this one. For the safe bet I’ll be taking a punt on goals which was all but a formality in Hemel Hempstead games last season and has been in both sides’ friendlies so far this year.

3) IA Akranes vs Grindavik (Iceland 1. Delid, 8:15PM)
Again I’m going somewhat against the grain on this one but who’s going to stop me? You may look at league position here and see 2nd vs 2nd bottom and think this could be a walkover but Grindavik have been putting up one hell of a resistance as of late. A 2-2 draw last time out against league leaders Leiknir Reykjavik sealed a run of 4 straight games without defeat for the struggling side which has now put them within touching distance of escaping the relegation zone for the first time this season and I actually think they are capable of achieving that tonight. They face off against 2nd placed IA Akranes who although are flying high in the league have hit a bit of a rough patch as of late. It’s two losses on the bounce now for Akranes against 5th and 7th in this 12 team league and it’s two losses on the bounce as well including a loss to KA who sit 7th. It’s hardly a rich run of form for a side who were only a few weeks ago weighing up their chances of promotion! But to add to all of this, Grindavik have an excellent record against IA Akranes over recent years. The two have already met twice this season in league and cup with Grindavik victorious on both occasions and in the last 7 meetings IA Akranes have won just once. I think this is a great price for the visitors to get something out of this game.
